Western Audio Visual & Security Technology Experience Tour: Yorba Linda Water District

Western Audio Visual and Security (WAVS) recently completed a design-build project for the Yorba Linda Water District (YLWD).  After completing a project, we occasionally have the opportunity to host a Technology Experience Tour. In the case of Yorba Linda Water District, we were lucky enough to do so!

Before we move forward, some of you may be wondering: “Wait – what is a Technology Experience Tour?”

Let’s answer that question first.

What is a Technology Experience Tour?

Once we complete a project, we often work with the client afterwards to host a Technology Experience Tour in order to feature the new or upgraded audio visual system.

We then invite the neighboring cities and municipalities to give them the opportunity to view a recently upgraded or newly integrated audio-visual system.

We want to give attendees the opportunity to ask questions in a relaxed environment to the WAVS team, as well as the staff hosting the tour. The questions can cover why specific products were used, how the city or municipality selected Western Audio Visual & Security as their integrator, or how long it took the city or municipality to budget for this project.

Now that we’ve defined what a Technology Experience Tour is, let’s talk specifically about the Yorba Linda Water District tour!

Yorba Linda Water District Technology Experience Tour

For the Yorba Linda Water District Technology Experience Tour, the WAVS team included Erik Wilson, Head of Engineering, Hailey Schellin, Account Executive, and members of our Sales & Marketing team.

The tour began with introductions by Hailey and then transitioned into Erik reviewing our approach on the design-build of this project.  Erik provides in depth analysis of each sub-system and reviews why specific products were used over others.

In the case of Yorba Linda Water District, they utilized WAVS for a design-build of their boardroom, training room and conference room. Western AVS updated the rear projection system and installed monitors at each seated dais position. YLWD also received wireless presentation capabilities. Western AVS also upgraded the training room and closed session conference room.

This boardroom was unique in the fact that it did not use a control room. Rather than use a control room, they were provided with a touchscreen capable of controlling all necessary functions at the Clerk’s station.

We had quite a few attendees at this event mainly because the staff of the Water District wanted to attend and ask questions as well. We always want to make sure all attendees get to have a hands-on experience with the system and give it a “test drive” of their own to see if it is something they may be interested in.

At the conclusion of each tour, guests are given another opportunity to ask any additional questions they may have.  WAVS also provides complimentary lunches to all the attendees.

So why do we host Technology Experience Tours?

Well, there’s a few reasons.

We like to host the Technology Experience Tours to not only provide information, but be a resource as well, for cities and municipalities that may have little guidance on where to begin.  We act as a resource by offering suggestions on what qualifications to look for when selecting a design-build integrator to make sure that their project will go as smooth as possible.

At WAVS, we do our best to take the vision from the client and create a reality for them.  We do our best to accommodate the needs of our client and make sure that the solution includes the features they need most.  We want each client to feel comfortable with their new system and we aim to create each system as user friendly as possible.

Western Audio Visual Technology Showcase Tour: City of Covina Council Chamber

Western Audio Visual (WAV) recently completed a design-build project for the City of Covina – Council Chamber. On special occasions after completing a project, we will host a Technology Showcase Tour.

In the case of City of Covina, we were lucky enough to do so!

Before we move on, some of you may be wondering – “Wait – what’s a Technology Showcase Tour?”

So let’s answer that question first.

We then invite the neighboring cities and municipalities to give them the opportunity to view a recently upgraded or newly integrated audio-visual system.

Furthermore, we want to give attendees the opportunity to ask questions in a relaxed environment to the WAV team, as well as the City staff hosting the tour. The questions can cover why specific products were used, how the City selected Western Audio Visual as their integrator, or how long it took the City to budget for this project.

Now that we’ve answered that question let’s talk specifically about the City of Covina tour!

City of Covina Technology Tour

For the City of Covina Technology Showcase Experience Tour, the WAV team included Erik Wilson, Head of Engineering, Hailey Schellin, Account Executive, members of our Sales & Marketing team and members from our Security and Service team.

The tour began with introductions by Hailey and then transitioned into Erik reviewing our approach on the design-build of this project.  Erik provides in depth analysis of each sub-system and reviews why specific products were used over others.

In the case of City of Covina, the council chamber included a control system, voting system, two 90” displays and microphones and audio systems.

We had quite a few attendees at this event, but even then, we want to make sure all attendees get to have a hands-on experience with the system and give it a “test drive” of their own to see if it is something they may be interested in.

The guests were invited to sit at the dais for a hands-on experience of the technology installed at each position.  The guests were also able to demo the custom voting system that was designed by WAV.

Erik showed everyone how you can seamlessly and practically effortlessly cast your phone, tablet or laptop wirelessly to the system. By doing this, you can showcase whatever it is you’d like to present. From video to presentation to photos, the system can handle it.

The guests then migrated to the renovated control room to see an example of the operational flow of a council meeting.  This can give our guests inspiration for future projects and keeps them aware of technology that is currently available.

Attendees were also able to test the new microphones installed by Western AV.

At the conclusion of each tour, guests are given another opportunity to ask any additional questions they may have.  WAV also provides complimentary lunches to all the attendees.

In the case of City of Covina, we also did a raffle giveaway to attendees!

Commercial or Consumer Grade Displays?

What should be utilized for your workspace?

This week on the Western Audio Visual Blog, we will discuss the type of displays that can be utilized for your office, and the benefits associated.

In today’s world, we are constantly bombarded by advertisements for the bigger and better TV. Every big box retail store, from Costco to Target, are selling TV’s. And they are ever changing. But what does that mean for the workspace? Nowadays, Commercial Grade Displays are quite advanced from their Consumer Grade siblings. The differences range in Quality of Warranty to Run Life.

What Are the Differences?
We will utilize Samsung as an example in this realm. The majority of manufacturer’s follow similar protocol.

1.) Warranty

Samsung’s Commercial Grade Displays carry a 3-Year On-Site Parts and Labor Warranty. This means that, if there is a Display Failure that is not caused by the Owner, Samsung Service Technicians will come out to the location, take the display down, as long as it is not mounted higher than 8 Feet, and either repair or replace the display.

Samsung Consumer Grade Displays carry a warranty of 90 Days Parts and Labor for a Consumer Grade Display that is utilized in a Commercial setting. Also, the owner will need to remove the display and send it in for either replacement or repair.
In the end, Commercial Displays carry a lower cost of ownership. The benefits outweigh the lower initial cost of a Consumer Grade Display.

2.) Display Run Life

The average display that is utilized in a Commercial setting is on for 8 hours. If utilized for Digital Signage, for menu boards at a restaurant or advertisement in the lobby of a Corporate Facility, the average daily usage can range anywhere from 12-24 hours.

A Commercial Grade Display has approximately 5 times the Run Life of a Consumer Grade Display. This is due to higher quality internal components being utilized for the construction of the displays. Commercial Grade Displays are manufactured with the knowledge that they will be on much longer than the TV in your house. As a result, their average lifetime is much longer.

What this means for a consumer in a commercial setting is again, lower cost of ownership since a TV will not need to be replaced every 18 months, but every 4-5 years or so.

3.) Features, Features, Features

A.) Internal Timers – Many Commercial Grade Displays have internal timers that can be utilized to program the run times. If you would like the Displays to be on from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, these settings can be programmed in to the Displays, eliminating the need for the installation of a Control System to turn the displays on and off.

B.) Portrait or Landscape – Commercial Grade Displays can be utilized in either Portrait or Landscape mode, while Consumer Grade Displays can only be utilized in Portrait Mode. This is a problem, as it limits the range of deployment for a Consumer Grade Display.

C.) Quality of the Screen – Commercial Grade Displays utilize Commercial-Grade glass with multiple layers that allow for 7/24/365 operating cycles. This glass is specifically designed for longer hours of operation than the glass in Consumer Grade Displays.

D.) Cooling – Consumer Grade Displays are not built for the same cooling potential that Commercial Grade Displays have. Consumer Grade Displays place importance first on aesthetics of the device, and this affects the cooling potential.

Commercial Grade Displays have full ventilation incorporation and/or cooling fans built in to allow proper ventilation, which increases the lifespan quite drastically. Heat is the number one cause of damage in the screen of displays, and once the damage has occurred, the unit is permanently damaged.
